In the marine environment, the entire food chain receives it’s energy from the bio molecules synthesised by tiny microscopic plants known as micro algae or phytoplankton.

They utilise photosynthesis in the same manner as with more familiar land plants.

Phytoplankton play a vital role in nutrient cycling. They absorb excess nutrients such as ammonia, urea, nitrates, phosphates and potassium as well as some metals such as iron, copper, manganese, zinc, molybdenum and vanadium.

By the removal of excess nutrients, phytoplankton help to maintain water quality and regulate PH, acting as a natural living bio filter. With over 10 years of development and research, our in-store cultures are the strongest they've ever been!

As well as a water conditioner and food, phytoplankton has been found to supply less understood benefits - therapeutic, almost antibiotic-like effects have been reported on fish and other marine animals. Some believe that this may be a clue to compounds expelled by the algae itself rather than by the removal of nutrients and chemicals from the water.


Phytoplankton will feed and help to increase the biomass of zooplankton within a marine system, such as ciliates, copepods, rotifers, and some marine shrimp which are considered essential for the survival of some fish and invertebrates.
